52 projects goal setting painting projects

52 Projects :: I was made to make :: UPDATE & Projects #9-#50!

It has been a long time since I have been on here. One of my big goals for 2015 has been to keep this space active and to express the artistic parts of myself that have been long buried, mainly through the 52 Projects series. What I didn’t expect was that this series would reawaken a part of me in such a way that I couldn’t stop creating. I found myself at a fork in the road in my career and at a place in my photography business (that 5-year mark of a small business that is so crucial) where I’m stepping over the threshold into something new. I’ve tried a lot of new things over the past two years, but I know that focusing in is something that I have needed to do for a long time both for my sanity and also just for survival’s sake. So, after that meeting with Marjorie and Shareese in Lexington, I knew I could not ignore my deep desire to paint. I came home experiencing what a friend of mine called, an “artistic renaissance.” She was right. I was reborn in many ways. When Shareese asked me if I was going to say “yes” to God, I didn’t realize at the time that it meant saying “yes” to painting.

But I found myself realizing, in mid-March, that I could sign up for our open studios event at the Hobbs, where I have my studio, and I could exhibit paintings in addition to photography. I signed up, even though all kinds of voices bubbled up and told me things like: you don’t have enough time, you’re a photographer and not a painter, what if you don’t sell anything? I signed up, and my good friend Nathan, in the midst of my out-loud worrying and anxiety, told me to just focus on the making. If nothing sells and it’s a failure, move on, I’d have lost nothing except some money on supplies. It seemed simple.

So I started creating. And I couldn’t stop. And I put this space on hold because I was so overwhelmed by the creating, I just didn’t have energy to write about it. I told my friend Charity that I couldn’t possibly include all my paintings as projects – that was cheating and against the spirit of what I was doing. When I set out to do 52 Projects, the idea was that I’d explore a diverse range of projects. Charity laughed at me and said, “Girl, you’re a human.” She encouraged me to include them as projects. Because they are. I made each and every one of them. I painted in every spare moment, from the time I woke up, to the time I went to bed. I neglected laundry and dishes. My voice students walked into a living room with paintings stacked everywhere. I was too excited to go to bed. In the mornings, I’d wake up early, too full of ideas to sleep. It was exhausting. But I was so surrounded by loving and wonderful people through this crazy time, and that is something I don’t want to forget. I had long phonecalls with my friend Laura sometimes while I was painting. My friend Amanda looked at my work with fresh eyes and encouraged me to value my work in a new way. My Mom and Dad helped me in the mad scramble to turn my studio into a gallery and to get everything ready those two days of the show. I sit here now, about a week and a half after that open studio show a completely different person. I have a new purpose I haven’t felt in a very long time, perhaps ever. I’m still in a fresh and new place, but I put myself out there. I sold work. I’m taking my first commissions. I have something to say, and Marjorie was right. I don’t need anyone’s permission.
