This is another project inspired by my Mom. For Christmas, she made me and my sister-in-law some truly wonderful homemade peppermint sugar scrub. I used to go to TJ Maxx just to get jars of specialty sugar scrubs. I have drier skin than most, and sugar scrub has always been a major help in keeping my skin soft and hydrated. For the past couple of years, I haven’t been using it as often.
When I opened my Mom’s gift, I was so excited! Getting handmade gifts is so special to me. She even packaged it in an antique ball jar and tucked some adorable minty fabric under the lid. Mom, you’re awesome.
I had the impulse to hoard it immediately, and then it occurred to me that I could make my own to replace it when it is gone! This is a small, easy project that I was able to do with things I had around the house. I may even start gifting it like Mom!
I used her recipe, only varying the kind of essential oil I used. I took a cue from her and cut out some muslin to cover the lid. I quickly embroidered a little lemon in the center to make it fancy. 🙂
Lemon Sugar Scrub
makes one pint jar, plus a little extra
2 cups granulated sugar
1/4 cup coconut oil, liquified but not hot
5-6 drops of essential oil of your choice
Food coloring (optional)
Mix coconut oil and sugar together. I did this with my hands. I am so good at making a mess and love getting my hands dirty! If you want to color your scrub, you can do that now, or divide it in two like I did and color half of it for a cute layered effect in the jar. I only used 2 drops of food coloring – you really don’t need much!
Press the sugar mixture into the jar, alternating if you colored half like I did. Then you can seal the jar and use or gift away!
When you use this scrub, it is important to put it on when your skin is wet and then scrub it in, let it sit on your skin so the sugar can dissolve, and then rinse it off so you can get the full benefits of the scrub. The coconut oil works wonders on dry skin, and my lemon version smells good enough to eat!
Happy making & have a wonderful Thursday, brave friends!
Inspo! Love it 🙂 x, jenna
